Our History

Risa Pedzewick holds a double BA in English from Marist College, a Career Technical Education certificate from UCLA extension, a graphic novel professional certificate from Emerson College, and two art and animation certificates from Berkeley City College. She began tutoring in 2014 as a way to make extra income and it quickly turned into a lifelong passion. She has worked in private education to teach SAT, AP English, College Essay Coaching, accelerated English courses, and developed curriculum courses. Additionally, she has worked in public education since 2015 helping special education students with various learning disabilities, IEPs, and 504s to succeed academically in math, chemistry, physics, art, and English.

This variety of experience in education tiers has shown her that, while some students may have differing levels of innate proficiency, learning is a skill and those who are dedicated are capable of rising beyond what they may have thought they were capable of. Talent without work does not take students as far as dedication to learning.

She has been recognized by her ability to explain ideas and concepts in a way that is receivable to students. More than once a student has commented, "Why hasn't anyone explained it to me like that before?" Whether it's math or grammar, she recognizes that many places where she once struggled as a student in school gives her the ability to understand the sticking points for other students. She engages students to meet them where they are at and is able to figure out what they need in order for the information to take hold. Her method allows for students to think through the lessons in a way that they increase their independence and ultimately may not need her anymore.

 

The goal is to become independent and exit tutoring with a skill set that they can take with them into the next education cycle.
